Be My Guest

I finally finished the 2021 project! I know, we’re more than halfway through 2022. Not to fear, I started the 2022 projects. But, I was finally able to get the closet interiors done and I am relieved that the 2021 project is complete.

My goal with this room – as it was with the back guest room and the house overall – was to create a serene space that fit the aesthetic of a Folk Victorian farmhouse. I already had the bedding for this room that fit that criteria and I found a piece of art with the right color scheme that I fell in love with. That artwork became my inspiration for the room. The print entitled ‘Daydreaming’ seamed perfect for the bedroom and the artist was contemporary to when my home was built.

‘Daydreaming’ by Winslow Homer

My Libra brain required that I correct the closets so that they appear symmetrical. Originally, one had a 30 inch door and the other had an 18 inch door. Both now have 18 inch doors. And, while I was overhauling the closets, I decided to line them with cedar and use cedar shelves and closet rods. Not an inexpensive endeavor but I love it so much, I also decided to put it in my main bedroom suite (the 2022 project). The closet configuration had also begged for a window seat between them from the time I moved in. I built that as a storage bench and lined the interior with cedar as well. The cushion was purchased but is custom. I use Cushion Source when I need custom and/or uncommon sized pillows or cushions and find myself with limited time (or motivation). I love that I can send my own fabric and the quality is always amazing.

Because I knew I needed to replace the windows and planned to hire a professional to refinish the wood floors as well as buy furniture for this room, my budget was substantial. However, the addition of the cedar closets did put me over that budget. In any case, here’s where this room ended up financially….

  • Millwork (including all cedar components)…………….$1,022
  • Windows, Doors, and Hardware……………………………….$2,187
  • Drywall & Paint…………………………………………………………….$ 125
  • Wood Floor Refinishing………………………………………………$1,700
  • Furniture, Linens, & Accessories……………………………….$1,802
  • Lighting (already had lamps)…………………………………….$ 199

Here are the room’s before and after photos…..

I am very pleased with how this room turned out. Because of the color scheme, I’m calling this my earth element room. I hope my guests will enjoy it as much as I do. Now, off to wrap up the 2022 project.
